Senate Democrats Block Reform Preventing Citizenship to Illegal Immigrants with Serious Criminal Records
What would Klobuchar have Done?

St. Paul, Apr 5 - Senate Democrats, lead by Minority Leader Harry Reid, blocked an amendment yesterday that would prohibit illegal aliens who have been convicted of a felony such as kidnapping, assault and battery or burglary from gaining U.S. citizenship.

“It is outrageous that the Senate Democrats blocked an amendment prohibiting felons, who are already in this country illegally, from gaining U.S. citizenship,” said Heidi Frederickson, press secretary for Mark Kennedy ’06. “Those who enter this country illegally to commit a crime should be held accountable, not rewarded with citizenship.”

Harry Reid, the Minority Leader said yesterday, "I do not have to explain in any more detail than what I have as why I don't want to move forward. I don't agree with the amendment. I don't think it's going to benefit this legislation that is pending before the Senate and I'm going to do what I can to prevent a vote on it.” (Charles Hurt, “Criminal alien exception blocked,” Washington Times, April 5, 2006)

“It’s clear that national Democrats are supporting Amy Klobuchar in this race because she continues to march in lock-step with their obstructionist agenda,” added Frederickson. “Were Ms. Klobuchar a Senator, would she have remained silent as her leadership blocked an effort to prevent illegal immigrants that are convicted felons from gaining citizenship?”
