Social Security

Retirement security is a critically important issue facing our nation. We must work to make sure that we protect Social Security, but also strengthen Medicare and our pension system, for retirees today and for generations to come.

My parents rely on Social Security and I’ll make sure nothing happens to the benefits that they and other seniors depend on. We must continue to honor the promise of Social Security to those who worked hard, paid into the system, and now, like my parents, rely on Social Security. At the same time we have an obligation to address the changing needs of the Social Security system today, to ensure it is there for future generations.

When Social Security was created in 1935, its designers had no way to forecast our country’s population growth, especially the dramatic increase due to the baby boomer generation, or the increase in life expectancy. What we can forecast from today’s census is that changes are needed in order to protect Social Security for our seniors and strengthen it for our children.

Our children and grandchildren deserve the same opportunity for a secure retirement, as their parents and grandparents. In addition to the solvency issue, many younger workers face the real possibility that they’ll get back less from Social Security than they put in. That’s just not fair.

Those elected to Congress have an obligation to address the issues of the day, not to pass them along to future generations. Now is the time to bring Social Security into the 21st century and ensure its survival for generations to come.
