Health Care
America has the world’s best health care delivery system, but a lousy way of paying for it. We must reform our health care system to fix these problems but in a way that doesn’t jeopardize technological breakthroughs.
Right now the system is both wasteful and unfair: Doctors are performing tests patients don’t need, just to protect themselves from lawyers. Big companies get a tax deduction to buy insurance, but many individuals don’t. That’s why I introduced the Fair Care for the Uninsured Act, to provide much needed access to health care by giving individuals the same tax benefits that large companies receive.
With both health care costs and the number of uninsured rising dramatically, it’s clearly time that we put doctors and patients rather than insurance companies and government back in charge of the system.
That’s why I support allowing individuals to own their own health plans through Health Savings Accounts. Past experience has shown that when given control of their health coverage, individuals demand more for their money and are more efficient consumers.
We also need to pass meaningful medical liability reform to keep insurance premiums down while allowing patients a wider variety of doctors to choose from.
I remain committed to finding affordable and accessible health care solutions for all Minnesotans.
